Leigh began her career in the voluntary sector, supporting and managing group work for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. She qualified as a social worker in 2005 and has been involved with frontline child protection since. She worked for City of Edinburgh Council (Scotland) as a Social Worker and then Senior in a statutory team for 12 years before moving on to become the Child Protection Lead Officer for East and Midlothian Public Protection Team. Leigh is currently working independently as a social work trainer and consultant across Scotland. She has years of experience in frontline child protection work: from assessment and intake to joint investigative interviews, looked after and accommodated children to permanence and adoption work. Leigh was deputy and later chair of a fostering panel for several years and was a Family Group Conferencing Co-ordinator for a period of time. Leigh was recently appointed to undertake independent assessments for Children’s Hearings Scotland.
Her interest in Sign of Safety started in 2008 when she attended her first 5-day training with Professor Andrew Turnell in Gateshead. Since this time, she has attended many Signs of Safety trainings, events and presented her casework at the Leicester International and Western Australian Gatherings (2014). She has been involved in supporting and training colleagues in the use of the approach and facilitates Signs of Safety meetings to help resolve professional conflict within the workplace. Leigh continues to use the Signs of Safety approach in practice, which provides her with a wealth of case examples including mappings, safety plans and direct work with children. Leigh is committed to supporting child centred safety planning and working in partnerships with Local Authorities, children and their families to help establish effective working relationships.
Leigh became a licensed Trainer in December 2014 and Consultant in 2017. Since this time, she has delivered training and provided consultancy to several local authorities across the UK working closely with senior management teams and frontline staff to implement and improve Signs of Safety in practice. Leigh is comfortable working in different jurisdictions across the United Kingdom and has knowledge of the different legal systems.
