Kerry qualified as a social worker in 2009 and after this started her career with Newcastle City Council. Prior to this, Kerry worked for 10 years for Gateshead Local Authority, predominantly in PRU (Pupil Referral Units) schools, Inclusion Units and the Youth Offending Service working with some of the most vulnerable children and young people.

Signs of Safety was first introduced to Kerry in 2010 when she attended a 2-day training course facilitated by U.K Regional Director Viv Hogg. Kerry has been using the Signs of Safety approach in her work with families and practitioners since this time. During her time in Newcastle, Kerry has worked within the MASH (Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub) responding to front door referrals and strategy discussions as part of a multi-agency team made up of Social Care, Early Help, Police, Health and Education. Kerry also worked as a senior within the Family Intervention Team in Newcastle providing direct support to families on an intensive basis.

Kerry then attended the 5-day Advanced Signs of Safety training in Alnwick in 2016 which further evoked her passion around this approach. Following this training, Kerry worked very closely with colleagues she was supporting; encouraging and guiding them to use this approach within their everyday practice with families, and allowing practitioners and families to see and experience the difference that working in this way can make to all involved. At this point, Kerry was employed as a senior practitioner within the Early Help team working to support practitioners in their work and engagement with families. Kerry supported partners and colleagues, and colleagues would request she facilitate live ‘mapping’ of cases where there was professional conflict regarding thresholds or concerns around managing risk.

Kerry became a licensed trainer in Signs of Safety in May 2018. Kerry has been involved in providing training to Social Workers, Early Help practitioners and a range of professionals from children’s services in the U.K and Northern Ireland.

Kerry is extremely passionate about working with families and ensuring that children and young people achieve the best possible outcomes in their lives and have a voice in the decisions that are made regarding their future.
