Working with vulnerable children requires social workers to engage with many family members as well as professionals in often complex and heart-wrenching circumstances. Social workers may be supporting children to stay at home, to be reunified with their families, or working with youngsters in long-term out-of-home care. In all of these circumstances, the safety and healing of the child depends on strengthening their sense of connection and belonging with their family, community and culture, together with the carers they might be living with.
The Words and Pictures methodology is an integral part of safety planning within the Signs of Safety® approach to child protection and has many other applications in a range of clinical and case work settings. The Words and Pictures method uses plain language age-appropriate words together with stick figures to empower parents to explain complex situations to children without creating blame or shame.
Led by experienced and passionate child protection professionals — Pene Turnell and Caara Goddard who are both licensed Signs of Safety Trainers and Consultants — this two-day virtual workshop will help practitioners navigate the use of the Words and Pictures in cases where domestic violence and/or coercive control are the key issue.
Given the centrality of Words and Pictures within the Signs of Safety Safety Planning process, it is vital that practitioners take a deep dive into the complexities inherent in this work to learn how to navigate the potential pitfalls — so that the Words and Pictures work they lead is helpful and clear, grounds the safety planning work and plays a part in healing within families to foster the wellbeing of everyone involved.
In this small group training, participants will benefit from personalised support and build connections with their peers through continuous class discussion, participatory learning exercises and breakout activities.
Caara and Pene are excited to join together to bring their combined enthusiasm for Words and Pictures to offer an inspiring and energizing interactive training that will be practical since it will be grounded throughout in examples of work they have both been directly involved in. Pene and Caara look forward to you joining them.
